Regions Small Producers are Big Winners

The 19th of July marked one of the biggest days on the Perth Hills wine making calendar. The Hub in Mundaring played host to this year’s Perth Hills Wine Show, with wineries from across the region vying for medals and trophies.

The evening showcased over 110 entries from this unique region, with renowned judges Virginia Wilcox chief winemaker at Vasse Felix, Kim Horton chief winemaker at Ferngrove and Alan Dineen the proprietor of Chateau Guildford judging this years wines.

There were two big winners on the night, with Malmalling Vineyard taking home the prestigious Chairman trophy for their 2008 Shiraz, this wine also took out the inaugural John Walsh Memorial trophy for best Shiraz, as well as Wine of the Show. Hainault Vineyard was the other big winner, earning Best Red Varietal and Best Value Wine of Show for their Cabernet Sauvignon, contributing to Hainault also being awarded Most Successful Exhibitor at Show.

This year was the launch of the John Walsh Memorial Trophy; this trophy was created to recognise the best regional Shiraz. John Walsh’s widow, Rosemary Walsh presented the award and spoke of her husbands’ ongoing love of Shiraz, commenting on his background as an academic, not a winemaker but his immense love for the region and the spectacular reds it creates. John became the first president of the Perth Hills Vignerons Association and Rosemary spoke of her gratification of him being remembered in such a way.

This year’s event was generously supported by the WA Wine Press Club, Labelworld, SWAT, Portavin, Cospak, John Day MLA, Hon Helen Morton MLC, Sharryn Jackson MP, as well as the Kalamunda Chamber of Commerce. The ongoing support of these generous individuals and organisations has allowed for the ongoing promotion of premium wines within the Perth Hills region.

To sample these award-winning wines simply come along to the Perth Hills Wine Show, which will be run in conjunction with Mundaring Truffle Festival this year over the weekend of 31st July and 1st August. This year’s event will offer wine lovers the opportunity to sample more than 100 of the regions premium wines, and the chance to talk to winemakers about their products. Entry is $15 and includes an etched tasting glass, a catalogue and unlimited tastings within the pavilion.
